Because the deceptively innocent-looking symptoms of PH resemble everyday complaints of most people (tiredness, fatigue, swelling, dizziness, and palpitations), PH is a 'rare' disease probably because it's still unidentified in many people. The medicine available to treat the symptoms until a double lung transplant is monthly breathtakingly expensive.
Current research shows that combination therapy (combining different kinds of treatment) is very effective to help manage the symptoms. Worldwide there are 17 different treatments approved for PH, but only 1 is available in South Africa. Consequently, health insurance companies do not always cover the life-saving medication needed, because it is imported.
